August 21, 1947 – October 29, 2008



Maria “Abby” Treviño passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Oct 29, 2008, at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Washington, DC. She had courageously fought Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma since July 2002, never losing her spirit or strength.

She was born Aug 21, 1947 in Santa Maria, TX to Frank and Velia (Vega) Treviño. She lived several years in Burlington-Edison, WA before moving to Omaha, NE after completing her education. She lived many years in Fort Walton Beach, FL, then moving back to Washington for a few years before moving back to Omaha. After being diagnosed with Lymphoma, she moved to San Antonio for a few years receiving cancer treatment. She spent her final years living with her son and his family in Washington, DC with the state-of-the-art Oncology department at the NNMC.

She was a nationally recognized poet being published in the National Library of Poetry. Her perseverance was prevalent in her life including her raising three children as a single mother. She was a consistent volunteer within her local Alanon achieving 17-years sobriety on Oct 10. More than anything, she was a devoted, caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She had a wonderful sense of humor and will be sadly missed.

She is survived by her children: Pamela “Rose” McKee of Mill Valley, CA, Randy Mastra and wife Dawn of Papillion, NE, J.R. Lowery and wife Tasha of Montclair, VA, and Amanda Lowery of Decatur, AL; nine grandchildren; three sisters: Espy Mora, Doris Hernandez, and Judy Lynch; and four brothers: Rudy Treviño, Paul Treviño, Manuel Treviño and Jimmy Treviño. She is predeceased by her husband, Michael Brooks; her parents; her brother, Robert Treviño; and her sister, Sylvia Treviño-Kelley.

The family encourages donations in her memory to Lymphoma Research Foundation at http://www.lymphoma.org/. Her services will be held in Quincy, WA at St Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, November 28, at 11:00 AM. Her scattering at sea ceremony will be held at sunset on May 17, 2009 in Destin, FL.
